How I Built My Pinterest Strategy From Scratch (and what I’d tell you from the start)

Going into this, I thought Pinterest was basically another social platform. Instagram, but with prettier pictures.

Not quite.

One of the first things I realized was that Pinterest needs somewhere worth sending people. Suddenly I wasn't just thinking about pins. I was thinking about my website, what was actually on it, what people would find when they clicked through, and whether any of it gave them a reason to stay.

That was a bigger project than I expected.

But the real shift was realizing I had to stop thinking about Pinterest like social media at all.

People go to Pinterest looking for something. An idea. An answer. A product. A solution to a problem they haven't quite figured out yet. They're searching — which means the way you create content for Pinterest is completely different.

My brain had gotten used to the opposite. Post something. Check it. Did it flop? Should I change the hook? Repeat.

Pinterest asks for a lot more patience. A pin doesn't tell you what it's capable of in the first 24 hours. The work you're doing now can keep showing up in search and sending people back to your business long after you've moved on to something else.

I actually really like that about it. But it means building something without needing immediate proof it's working — and coming from Instagram and TikTok brain, that took some unlearning.

If I were starting over, I wouldn't try to piece the whole thing together from random tips. I'd find people who actually know Pinterest, take a solid course, learn how keywords and search work, and spend real time on the analytics instead of just making more pins.

Because making the pin is the easy part. Understanding why you're making it, what someone's searching for, where you're sending them, and what the numbers say afterward — that's what turns Pinterest into something that actually works for your business, instead of just another place to post.

I built a plan before I started, and I'm working that plan — not guessing my way through it. This post is what that looks like in practice.
